Radio 4 recently broadcast Enoch's rivers of blood speech in full as part of the 50th anniversary, was it right or wrong to do so?

I don't really think it was "right" or "wrong". The Rivers of Blood speech is a thing that happened 50 years ago, but most people wouldn't know or care if it weren't for Radio 4 telling us. I'm not excited, I'm not outraged.

It's not like they broadcast it positively. They had an actor read bits out, then they had a team of hostile critics say it was wrong and bad. I think it's a bit embarrassing, why drag up a dead body to kill it again.

I'm not sure what the daily mail has to do with my question Nikki, seems as obscure as your Morgan Freeman post

It was wrong. We live in a world not dissimilar to that in which we lived then with regards to politics, immigration and terrorism. The same fears are expressed, the same devastating upheavals seems always on the horizon, the terrorism changes but remains both ever present and nondisruptive to society as a whole.

So why was it wrong now and not then?

Well, after a admittedly quick scan of the speeches transcript ........ seems pretty inflammatory to me. I know studies have found anger/hate are some of the biggest motivators we have psychologically but I really think its a dangerous practice for anyone especially politicians to engage in. We ,as Humans, really need to get over the fear we have of "others". We , as Humans, all share this Planet and are identical genetically so what's the point in hating others for what are minor differences? We as a species have reached the point in our development where we can literally destroy our home Planet. We, as a species, need MORE inclusion and understanding not less. Speeches like this serve no purpose other than to divide people when we NEED to come together more. Imho of course.

    Lol, yeah seems that way.

Anyway, I think replaying it , especially in todays political climate, was just sensationalism and counter productive to the public well being. As I mentioned earlier in this thread we, and I mean all the Western democracies need to be pulling together NOT drifting apart. Speeches like that only drive wedges between people and we have some perilous times ahead I'm afraid.

I like it when you have these quiet little moments of introspective rumination. Its actually quite endearing! Don't ever be too hard on yourself though, we all do things in the spur of the moment we later come to regret. x

ON TOPIC: No, not wrong to play the speech as far as I'm concerned. Never censor history.

I'm quite introspective when I want to be, which isn't often, it tends to drown out my greatness
