What are you going on about this for now? It seems to be your new forum obsession.
@Seb what are your thoughts on Superman having a car?
If Batman needs a car then Superman needs a car too in my opinion.
Ok, I may have been a teeny tiny bit drunk last night... but hear me out!!!
Whilst I wasn’t directly meant to be specifically critical of @Seb @pat, my point was meant to be that it does feel like this forum gets forgotten by Grant Naylor Productions.
As much as it pains me to say it, the old, old members (the glory hunters) who return every now and then just to say how good the site “used to be” (and how vile the current members are) make a semi valid point. There are barely any members left. So why isn’t the forum used to get more members? Is it because you get more ad revenue from Facebook?
The RD Facebook and twitter feed is always updated so why wasn’t the forum advertised on there? Why arent cast/crew Q&A’s done on the site or forum? It also feels that by the time the news goes out, it’s out of date. That Quarantine cast commentary didn’t even get a mention.
Why isn’t the forum mentions on all the FB posts? “Why not discuss it on the official forum etc etc”. I’m not telling mod @Pembers how to do his job, but c’mon. There’s only so many times the regulars here can discuss the best/worst episodes of Red Dwarf and @neilold liking horror/women crying...
I'd imagine that Seb knows that if he were to tell the truth (that we are all an embarrassment to GNP) we'd wear it as a badge of honor more than anything.
So what do we do now, do we all just start swearing and posting porn?
The simple fact of the matter as regards the forum is that there's unlikely to be the same level of engagement as it's had in the past, compared with social media. In the main, people just don't tend to sign up for forums very much any more. That's not specific to this forum, it's indicative of internet trends generally. Telling people on Facebook or Twitter "go and sign up for our forum and talk there" isn't going to have much of an impact - they'll just talk about it where they are. That doesn't mean we don't want people talking about the show on here, of course - it can be a really valuable place to get direct response from engaged fans - but it does mean that it's not the only outlet the way it used to be. Forums aren't the same as they were back when this site was set up, and it's not a huge stretch to suggest that if the site was set up afresh now, it may not have a forum at all (and even if it did, it might be more likely to have one that was more regulated in terms of not allowing non-RD discussion). But it does, and it's a long-standing tradition here, and we certainly don't want to just cut it loose.
As regards moderation, you know that the first priority is always ensuring that the actual Red Dwarf discussion sections are run as they should be. The difficulty I have with the off-topic section is that it can be hard to keep up with everything if I'm not here throughout every day (which I'm not, because it's not a full-time job). It doesn't mean that the place is just abandoned or forgotten but it does mean that at times, things have to be a little bit more self-policing. I have to trust you guys not to completely bring the site into disrepute; and of course still deal with important matters when I can, but hope that in the main you'll be sensible enough not to do anything to risk just getting the place shut down (which it could be if it turned out to be more trouble than it was worth). Sometimes things do get out of hand, and sometimes there'll be a whole situation (usually involving Neil) that by the time I get to it, has spiralled so much or had so many reports it's hard to know where to start. I'll admit that I could do a bit better at getting those things under control - but then, as we've talked about before, it's hard to know sometimes what the prevailing mood is among those of you who actually are on here all the time. For example, should I be outright banning Ted Danson for the repeated language about Neil? Should Neil be permanently banned once and for all? What about Sammer4Rimmer's constant copypasta nonsense? If I just banned everyone for this stuff, would there even be a forum left? What would you do in my shoes? Sometimes "letting it blow over" is the best course, but if you feel there are times when that isn't the case and firmer action is needed, then do please guide me (and I mean that sincerely, non-sarcastically).
(On the flip side it is also a bit frustrating to me when there's new Red Dwarf and some of the regulars in this section don't seem interested in talking about it - sometimes it feels like some of the people here aren't here to talk about Red Dwarf at all! But equally... that's your prerogative just as it's the prerogative of anyone in the show-specific sections not to come near off-topic.)
So yes, basically: you're not forgotten, but you are sometimes difficult to keep under control. I don't see everything that goes on (it's impossible to, really) and I don't see the stuff you talk about in private chat channels. So that's why I'm sometimes reluctant to go wading in with the mod hammer even when I do see stuff, because I can't always understand the context of everything (and as comments above have said, sometimes I'll take action on one thing and people will be like "But you ignored that!"). I do think that if you want this to be a place that we do try and encourage people to sign up for more, then some of the more offputting behaviour maybe needs curbing - whether that's massive signatures, political statements in avatars, repeatedly calling people "nonce", or whatever. If you don't want to change all that, then again - that's your prerogative, I'm not going to try and control it. But you can see, I'm sure, why it's difficult to really hold the place up to the unfamiliar as "Yes, this should be your first port of call...!"
I am a bit disheartened by the comments about the site and news as I don't think those are really fair nor do they have any real relation to matters on the forum. A lot of time is spent on a weekly basis compiling and writing content for the site - not just news, but also features and other original material. That is the main thing I'm hired by GNP to do and I put an awful lot of work into it throughout the week. Yes, social media and the fact that there are now lots more parties involved in a show's promotional cycle than there used to be means that things turn around a lot more quickly - but we are still the main source of official news and confirmations, and you know when you read it here that it's actually right (and has gone through various levels of approval), it's not just speculation. Just because an independent outlet runs a story like "Red Dwarf XIII is happening" based on comments from a convention two years before it's actually commissioned and confirmed doesn't mean they were right all along when we bring you the official announcement. And we do still get plenty of first-run stuff in those promotional cycles! So yeah, I think it's harsh to say that we're not providing good, regular material, or that we're always lagging behind.
I hope this addresses things a little bit, and shows I am listening to you. Happy to have further discussion on this!
Currently eating humble pie!!!
This is all well and good but where is @Tex_Rimmer ?
That's all well and good, but what about the issue of Superman's CAR?!
Basically what we've learned here is that it's all well and good until @Tex_Rimmer turns up driving Superman's car.
@Tex_Rimmer also needs to eat humble pie
I see the problems you're having here buddy. For what it's worth I agree with you. @neilold absolutely should be in jail. What can you do to make this happen and how can we as a community help you with this?
Well don't I feel thoroughly ignored!
I try really hard with you @Seb
Superman has a car because just because you can fly doesn't mean you should be denied the pleasure of owning a sweet ride, and when you have branding as iconic as that "S" shield why wouldn't you put it all over said sweet ride?
Thank YOU! I am finally satisfied.
Phew, thanks @Seb, the pressures off!
