From experience, Peugeot Diesel. Ford are cheaper to repair if you're going for an older car (10-15 years +) but a Peugeot Diesel is less likely to need to repairing in the first place and these days isn't likely to be excessively expensive to begin with. Personal car of choice: Peugeot 206 or 105 1.5 Diesel, either should be reliable and will get you a fantastic mileage (Easily 60 Mpg on the Motorway) (Beware of 105Ds around 100,000 miles though, they seem to have a habit of blowing their head gaskets around that point. It's a cheap enough fix if you're a competent mechanic (About £30 in parts) but it will be an expensive job if you're not (About £300+ in labour)). A Ford Focus 1.8 Diesel comes fairly close if you drive it carefully and it doesn't break. Haven't had a huge amount of experience with Vauxhall/Opal but from the ones I've driven they felt a bit cheap, not bad but they were certainly not fantastic as far as mileage went and on balance the Skodas I've driven seemed like they're probably better value for money. VW come closer to the Peugeot end of the scale, but they were Nazi cars and are more expensive to fix because they're German (And under the body work mechanically they're basically a Skoda anyway)... Haven't had good experience with Renaults though, in my experience Clios tend to break even quicker and more terminably than Peugeot 105s. AKAIK with something like a BMW, Jaguar or Audi you're basically paying a large premium just for the badge.

Not a fan of anything Italian (Among mechanics FIAT is supposed to stand for Fix It Again Tomorrow and Alfa Romeo supposedly has better performance but even worse reliability), just to put Italian engineering into perspective though, bear in mind in WW2 Piaggio made 4 engine bombers and ended up making mopeds.

That's all assuming you're driving a decent mileage, somewhere around 100 miles a day. Much less than that and you may be better off with a good Petrol engine, especially these days.

In the spirit of the thread however, period drama?

Chocolate chip cookies. Oreos have to be one of the most over-rated snacks in existence!

    Welches or Mountain Dew?
