I would have to say my favorite character would have to be lister but I'm also a pretty big rimmer fan.

The pains of selecting a single character.

If forced to choose, I would go for ol' Arnie J., just because I feel I share more qualities with him than anybody else and can really empathise with being a total prat.

    Think mine's sort of obvious...:-D

It's mainly because back when I first really started watching Red Dwarf, it was around the time [Chloe's version of] Kochanski arrived, and at that point I hated showers and preferred baths, and felt like I spent a lot of my time surrounded by complete idiots (in my case at school), so I must have just looked at the screen and seen the nearest thing to a kindred spirit I could find on Starbug. I know first-hand what it's like to have a long-ish surname that isn't always easy for other people to spell, and be the only one in your social circle who reads Austen novels willingly, and while I've never personally fussed about noisy pipes making their annoying sounds out of sequence, I reckon I'm the type of pedant who probably would. I've also occasionally been accused of sounding posh.

That said, I know virtually nothing about operas and have never owned a pony, so I'm not claiming to be exactly like Kochanski or anything. Just along fairly similar lines. ;-) (I'm also way more like Lister when it comes to tidying up!! lol)

Mine is Lister, I think he is the most real and believable of all the characters, although I love them all, the surrealness of the other characters makes them a bit hard to believe.

For a while my favourite was Kryten. And in some ways it still is, but I think I agree with you here. Particularly after Craig Charles's performance on Back To Earth.

I'm going to say Rimmer. Only because somewhat he reminds me of me when I was in a group of friends like that who necessarily didn't like me , but only kept me around to keep the group falling apart and that he has some of the best lines in the series! :-):-D

I do have a toy pony who sits on top of my alarm clock, though...but she's little and purple with shiny hooves, and wears a bracelet on her head like a halo. Hardly the same thing at all, but exceedingly cute.;-)

Obviously you and I have very different taste in ponies.
