Poor series 8. As one of it's few fans here, I wonder if it's a "British" thing to hate on it. All my friends who like RD in "real life" (all fellow Americans, obviously) like it just as much as the others. In fact, I remember when it came out, many people I knew said it was a return to form after the less-funny S7 (I'm a huge S7 fan, though). From watching the DVD documentaries on all the series, it looks like everyone involved had a great time making S8 as well.

Long story short, I'm not totally shocked that Doug would let some of the better stuff from S8 influence S10. After all, it was the last complete series, since S9/BTE was basically just a miniseries.

I'm Australian, so it's not just a brittish thing to hate on series 8.....I know from my own personal stance I was excited first hearing about how Rimmer was returning in series 8, however I was so disappointed when I actually came to see those episodes...and my distaste for series 8 has only grown over the years.

Also there was no "better stuff" in series 8, just stuff that was less painfully bad.....

I've never seen or heard of Kenan & Kel (after looking it up, it looks like it was a Nickelodeon show which was aimed at kids, which I was not by the time it was airing), but I like Friends quite a bit. I've got all the seasons of Friends, it's a pretty solid show as far as I'm concerned. I don't care for some of the characters on Big Bang Theory.

So the 'deranged droid' stealing Lister's body parts is apparently not Kryten, which begs the question: how on earth does this new character end up on board? I'm guessing they rescue it from somewhere. I totally wasn't expecting it to be so sinister looking - it's very unDwarfian. This could turn out to be a really good episode...and season. My hopes and expectations for 11 are rising with every news release.

    Sorry to hear that.

Luckily for me, Red Dwarf is one of those shows that can do no wrong (or at least, it hasn't... yet), and I enjoy all the series to varying degrees. Series 6 was the closest it came to anything resembling less-than-excellent, but that's only due to the cookie-cutter writing style utilized that year.

The screen behind Lister and the droid appears to say Medi Port #7 so I'd dare say the gang go to a space station of some sort where they encounter it.

The humor in series 8 is sillier then earlier series, it embraced more of a spoof tone for some reason.

I mean when you have them cheating in a prison basketball game with viagra its less red dwarf and more in tone with sillier sitcoms, and its not just that the characters did that its also that this was even a thing in an episode of red dwarf.

    And thats only one example.

Infact there was a script written by Paul Alexander for Series 8 called "Phwoaarr" according to wikia
Doug decided against it saying it would be inappropriate so the rimmer and kochanski stuff was moved to Cassandra instead but man Series 8 could have been much worse (somehow)

It's better to be get disappointed in a show you love, then to have not shows you get invested in. Red Dwarf is one of those shows that I grew up loving so much, that I will always give it a shot. Fortunately for me the more I've been hearing about this new series has been getting me more excited to see it. So no no matter how much I dislike series 8, it will never take away from how much I loved the show to begin with.
I'm surprised that the fact it was "inappropriate" was Doug's only issue with the script, particularly since Lister getting so jealous that he'd go on a murderious rampage couldn't be more out of character to his personality. I am glad it got reshuffled into being Cassandra because truth be told, it's the only series 8 episode I can tolerate.

I can agree with this now, but VIII certainly killed off my love for the show the first time round. The main reason I watch Red Dwarf is for its 'feel good' factor - no matter how down I'm feeling, it is guaranteed to lift my mood. But series VIII has the opposite effect - it depresses me. I suppose it's good that it has its fans, but I prefer to pretend it never happened, then everything's hunky dory!

Yes, this series is looking better and better. I hope the stories can live up to the improved visuals :-)

Yes, the upcoming new episodes had pretty much fallen into the background for me until the last few news reports arrived - I've been too preoccupied with other shows such as Game of Thrones - but I'm getting pretty excited now about season 11.

Well Dave are showing all of series V on Sept 10th, so that knackers my theory! They'll surely show VI the week after though, and probably X the week after that (skipping the troublesome ones) - so still on course for the 29th then :-D

While I do like the demented droid's design, I have to admit that it's design kinda feels more Modern Doctor Who, than it does Classic Dwarf.

Well it was designed by MILLENNIUM FX who have worked on Doctor who since 2005 so that probably explains that.

They don't ever have existed here anymore

Change of subject I think! Is anyone else watching all the episodes before XI airs and are you doing it in any particular order? Dave seem to be showing them in a more random order this time, but I quite liked the series countdown they did last time (I'm watching them in the usual order though, just finished series I).

If something used to be online but now isn't, that suggests it wasn't meant to be online in the first place. And so it shouldn't be discussed on here.

Friends reunited isn't on line anymore - neither is Woolworths.com.

Must these be banished to silence? :?
