I have only just managed to get around to watching this all the way through and I know this is going to land me in trouble, but honestly, what a load of old crap !!!!

I can only say that was the most wasted 2 1/2 hours I 've ever used in my short stay on this earth.
what do others think of this film ? I'm trying to decide if I have enough life in me to see if the 2010 sequel can be any worse.

Always thought it overrated to. Perhaps it's just aged badly. Which is kinda ironic if you think about it

I remember one of my friends had an ancient disc that had a game on it where you could talk to Ultra Hal from this. We used to spend ages trying to make it flip out and swear haha good times. But it would get all triggered if you mentioned Frank or Dave, and it wouldn't let my friend called Frankie play, insisting that it had killed him, and would change his name to "Judge". If you tried to make your name Dave, it would change it to David and say "I won't let you kill me again".

At a time when most depictions of space on film were b-movie quality, 2001 was captivating. It has since been superceded many times, and science fiction cinema, at its best, is taken more seriously. So I would say 2001 has probably just dated poorly. Space is no longer just a place for globular tentacled monsters to chase plastic ray gun wielding square jawed spaceship captains and scantily uniformed maidens in distress (more's the pity, I hear some cry), and the relative sobriety with which 2001 is executed itself seems unsophisticated compared to the action and casual humour of modern space opera. It's some time since I saw 2010, but I think I remember the book more than the movie, so probably give it a miss.

I'm probably the only one who can watch it without getting bored. I might also be the only one who likes it. And I get transfixed by the spaced-out bit...

Nah, I like it too, but then I'd read the book before watching the movie. And like most movies based on books it wasn't as good. But man, when it came out! The Special Effects! The Story! Stanley Kubrick directing! (Huge Kubrick fan) I don't re-watch it much these days as I've seen it gazillions of times but can still sit through it and enjoy it. 2010 is another story though........

I haven't ever read the book - must see if i can get it. Af for 2010 movie, however, couldn't even make it halfway through...

I got to the 2010 movie and didn't think much of that either so have to say I'm pretty glad they never got to making the 3rd book into a movie.

I do think 2001 dated really badly and image if I had got to watch it many years ago I might have better things to say about it.

2001 the movie was not based on 2001 the book. They were both written concurrently.

It was soooooo funny when he used to always pretend to be in space and put the same picture up of him in a supermarket....

I miss the predictable bore, personally
