As for the fan commentaries, I found them entertaining enough, but that was partly because both of them featured regular forum members. I don't know what I'd make of them if it was just a few random Red Dwarf fans that I wasn't familiar with. Anyway I think they were only featured on Back To Reality and Gunmen as those were a pair of particularly iconic episodes.

RE: How would you like your Series X DVD?

I'd rather the DVD's be devoid of any "fan" stuff, whether they be "Fan commentaries", "fan films" or cringeworthy segments shot at conventions.
You don't have to watch them! I like all that stuff :) besides Hattie's DJ Diary pretty much changed my life! (Oh the drama!)
If I hadn't seen it I might never have discovered and joined TORDFC, I've always been a fan, but it wasn't a huge part of my life and I wasn't part of any of the online communities. It was my younger brother discovering Red Dwarf through my old VHS collection and then getting/watching the DVDs that re-ignited my interest.

My brother and I attended our first DJ in 2005 after watching Hattie's DJ Diary and we've been to every one since. Following DJXII I quickly discovered the vast online fanbase (through BTLi initially) and met lots of lovely people, some of whom are now my closest friends, one of those people was Ian who has been my other half for 5 years. I moved from Stockport to London to be with Ian and we now share a house with Cappsy (who I also met through RD online) and our 2 cats. Being moderator on BTLi led to my being nominated to be on TORDFC team in early 2007. I became the Social Media Community Manager/PA, which in turn led to some other people wanting to pay me actual money to do Social Media stuff, that was quite nice :)

So yeah, in summary: I'd like to keep the fan content and especially the "cringeworthy segments shot at conventions", I like them the best! :D
No offence meant Jo, this is all terribly interesting for you I'm sure, but really that was my point. It's not terribly important or interesting in terms of the show itself. While I'm happy to read your story here and am pleased you all live in a big happy RD family, I don't really care to watch what some fans choose to get up to or listen to them talk over episodes on official DVD's just because they've achieved some sort of pseudo-fame in the fan-circuit.

Fan websites like GnT are great and I enjoy them for what they are and the different slant they can offer in discussing the show but at the same time that doesn't mean I found that "yeah but no" thing that appeared on one of the DVD's to be in any way worthy of inclusion.

My opinion is that I dislike independent fan produced content appearing on official DVD's, however much of a dream this may have been for those involved. Looking back over my comments perhaps I went too far in including the convention footage. I didn't mind it as a one off, as it pretty much confirmed to me that it isn't the sort of event I'd ever want to go to so it was interesting in that aspect.

If I'm honest I think Red Dwarf has maybe gotten a little too close and cliquey with its fanbase over the years and that's partly why the show lost some of its edge. Stuff like the Dibley family almost seems like it was written to service the dress-up crowd, even though they probably ended up hating it, which is ironic given that Dibley was probably initially created as a parody of the more hardcore fans (something Craig Charles even jokes about on the DVD).

I don't know of another show that involves and respects it's fans as well as Red Dwarf does and for that it is to be commended but at the same time the slightly blurred, almost incestuous working relationship that exists between them can be...I don't know, a little bit disturbing to me.

But then I'm a Red Dwarf fan...so I'm probably weird like that.

hold -- holding the holly hop drive will score points for your team while erm ..holding it
protect - protect the holly hop drive like capture the flag but your team must carry its own holly hop drive to stop the enemy nicking it.

RE: When did "classic" Dwarf end?
After the long wait fans are given a rehash of an idea from an old episode
No, they were given a pseudo-sequel to a previous episode with linking continuity (i.e. Polymorph and Emohawk or GMOTA and Rimmerworld)....AND, here's the really clever bit, the story was put together well enough so that the audience...even the hardcore fans, genuinely DIDN'T catch on until the reveal that this was what was happening. Look at the threads on here that were made at the time of the original screening if you don't believe me.

To pull the wool over the eyes of your audience once, as Grant and Naylor did with Back to Reality was an achievment. For Naylor to do it AGAIN, while dropping massive clues everywhere (a squid, the similar episode titles, etc) and still keep his audience guessing about what was real and what wasn't shows a tremendous amount of work went into constructing the story and further refutes your "lazy" accusation.
mixed with the overused plot device of fictional characters in the real world
Except that AGAIN, you've missed the point. Back to Earth ISN'T a story about fictional characters in the real world and if you think it is then you havn't been paying attention. The very point of implying metafiction was to throw the viewer a curveball and make them think "oh, so they're doing this whole angle"...it was, in very real terms the distraction that stopped people seeing the true curveball that the show was going to throw at you. Think of it this way too: how annoyed were you with Naylor when you thought he was actually going to destroy RD continuity by establishing these beloved characters as mere fictions? How much did it make you realise how much you actually cared about the characters in question? How much of a sigh of relief did you breath when you realised that it wasn't going to end that way after all and the status quo was, in fact going to remain unharmed. That kind of drama isn't produced by lazy writing or the sort of slap-dash/one dimensional fan-fiction you refer to.

Still...Naylor wasn't finished because there was that last final twist of drama where many of us seriously believed that Lister...the main character of the show was potentially going to be written out (quite possibly helped by the reinforcement in the viewers mind of Craig Charles other acting duties in the corrie scenes).

Lazy writing? Fan fiction? Do me a lemon!
You're absolutely entitled to your opinion as to whether or not you thought Back to Earth was any good.

But "lazy"? Given the amount of work that was put into it? Given the number of people who worked ridiculous hours, for barely any money (or in some cases, for absolutely nothing), out of nothing other than love for the show and their craft? You want to call it lazy? Really? What, exactly, are you basing that on?

If anyone should be insulted it's them, not you. Especially to come here onto the official forum and say it. Despite being the official forum, we don't censor negative opinion. But that comment's not fair. That's not fair at all.
After the long wait fans are given a rehash of an idea from an old episode mixed with the overused plot device of fictional characters in the real world & tiresome references to Blade Runner. Despite the obvious effort made by cast & crew it is lazy. The stuff of fan fiction.
Currently looking forward to my little girl's birthday on sunday, but not looking forward to the snow thats been forecast for over the weekend
I hope you will be posting a few pictures of her first birthday cake. Babies covered in cake are just adorable!

The number of parents calling with concerns about needing care and not being able to afford it is really hard to hear. Redirecting people to the state's program for payment assistance, but the processing time can be long. Our rates are already so much lower than the standard. I wish we were a not-for-profit so we could raise funds. *sigh*

You'd have been top of my list of people I'd have thought got it but wouldn't have bothered commenting on it.:)
Actually, I'm sometimes embarrassingly slow at getting jokes.
Don't worry, Bluey, I noticed :)
